Offered Services

Oak Tree Counseling Center offers a variety of different therapy services. Please explore this section to learn more about what you can expect if we work together.

Individual Therapy

Individual Therapy is a process where a therapist and client work together towards a desired change. This could happen in various ways such as by learning to understand the beliefs you have about yourself or your environment, what types of relationships you seek, or by working through difficult memories or trauma in the past.  For those who know exactly what they want to change or improve, individual therapy can be goal oriented and skill focused. However, sometimes it can be difficult to know what you want to change and so therapy can be a place to rest and relax, to slowly explore what it is that may be bothering you.

Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy is a great option when partners want to develop a deeper appreciation for each other, to grow closer with one another, and to cultivate love and intimacy. Though it is entirely normal for couples to struggle with various issues, it can sometimes be helpful to get an outside perspective. Oftentimes, people create expectations regarding their relationship based on experiences they have had in the past, usually with their family of origin. Oftentimes, these expectations clash and it can be difficult to figure out how to create a relationship that works for each person. A therapist's role in this setting is to help couples learn more about the already wonderful aspects of their relationship and to help them identify and work on the areas of conflict. A therapist can also greatly help to improve communication so that as couples face new challenges in the future, they are better equipped to work together as a team.

Family Therapy

Every family struggles with conflict. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out how to fix it or make things better. Family Therapy is an opportunity to learn more about the relationships between family members and how the family functions as a whole. Therapist can help to illuminate patterns of behavior, assist in improving communication skills, and help families create an environment at home that is safe and supportive for all. Sometimes every family member attends the family therapy session. At other times, it may just be a few members such as Mom and daughter, sister and brother, etc. So whether you are a new couple starting your family, a family with adolescents, or a family with adult aged children, family therapy may be the right fit for you.

Eating Disorders

If you are struggling with an eating disorder, it can be sometimes be difficult to reach out for help. Exploring your options is the first step. In addition to individual, couples, and family counseling for this issue, Oak Tree Counseling Center also offers assistance in exploring body image issues and in building skills for meal times. A therapist can have a one on one lunch with a client to help clients use skills in real time or facilitate a family meal where family members can learn how to support their loved ones during stressful meal times.

Postpartum Depression

The challenges a new mother encounters can be staggering and can often leave a person feeling depressed, regretful, or guilty. Individual therapy can be a place to share these emotions and thoughts without fear of judgement. For some, it may be helpful to ask a friend or family member to babysit so that you can focus on yourself during session time, but for others this may not be possible. So please feel free to bring your little one along with you to session so that you can still get the support you desire. Babies are always welcome at the office!

Play Therapy

If play is a child’s language, then toys can be thought of as the words. Through play therapy the child can work through their challenges and issues using the toys (pre-selected by therapist to facilitate emotional growth) that they choose, revealing their inner dialogue. Through play the child is able to test out various situations and behaviors in a supportive environment. Unconditional positive regard and acceptance encourages the child to feel safe enough to be able to explore their inner selves without censorship. In this environment children are able to try out different roles, work through conflicting emotions and thoughts, and try to figure out what the world is like. The child is able to form a relationship with the provider/therapist, and through this relationship they are able to develop trust, improved self-esteem, and self efficacy.

In non-directive child-centered play therapy, the child is in control, within some gently but firmly set limits. Children often feel that they do not have control over situations in their lives. Through play therapy they are able to work through these experiences in an environment that they are able to control. They can make the story be how they want it to be, they are in charge of the outcome. This feeling of control is vital to their emotional development as well as positive mental health. Children are able to use play as a means for developing problem-solving skills, ways to relate to others, expressing their feelings, and working on their behaviors, all at a safe psychological distance from reality.
